Patrice Cormier of the Rimouski Oceanic has been named captain of the Team Canada Juniors squad. Cormier from the small town of Cap Pele becomes the first New Brunswick native to wear the “C” for the Team Canada Junior squad. To me this is a perfect choice as Cormier plays very hard and will do anything asked of him. In last year’s tournament, Cormier played an important role in shutting down the oppositions best players. This year I expect the Team Canada coaches to use him in an offensive role as well.

The dreams of playing for the Team Canada Hockey team for the 2009/2010 World Junior Championship were dashed for 4 young players today. Brent Gormley (Moncton Wildcats), Nicolas Deslauriers (Rouyn-Noranda), John McFarland (Sudbury Wolves), and Tyler Seguin (Plymouth Whalers) were all sent back to their respective Junior teams Tuesday morning.

The news isn’t too much of a surprise and three of the four (Gormley, McFarland, and Seguin) have yet to be drafted by and NHL team and figure to be in Canada’s plans next year. Seguin is a bit of a surprise as he has played very well this season in the OHL, but as mentioned could be a front runner for next years squad.

The Canada Juniors play an all-star university team in their next game before final cuts are expected.

Where Allen relies on strong positional play, Roy prefers the butterfly style of goaltending and loves to challenge the shooters. He’ll sometimes take chances, but his athleticism allows him to recover quickly.

It doesn’t hurt that his uncle (Jeff) played numerous years in the NHL and is currently an NHL goalie coach for the Colorado Avalanche.

Martin Jones, an undrafted free-agent picked up by the Los Angeles Kings currently plays for the Calgary Hitmen of the WHL. Jones had perhaps one of the best statistical seasons for any goalie playing Junior hockey last year. His record of 45-5-4 is simply amazing, but many believe was a product of his surrounding team mates. Nonetheless, Jones (like Hackett) is another big goalie who occupies a lot of space and uses it well in the net.

The Team Canada Hockey executive has a tough decision ahead of them as all 4 goalies can play well when they need to. In my opinion, Jake Allen and Matt Hackett will be the goalies chosen to represent Canada and split time for the preliminary games. Goaltenders that possess strong positional skills generally fit well in Canada’s defensive systems . Typically a Team Canada goalie has two tasks: Get in front of the puck, and control the rebounds. Allen excels in both areas. With Allen’s experience and abilities, I believe he will be chosen as the goalie to play in the medal rounds for Team Canada and hopefully lead us to a gold medal.

What do you think?

Each year the best QMJHL players form an all-star team to face a similar team filled with Russian players. The tournament is a great way for QMJHL players to showcase their talents in hopes of grabbing a Team Canada World Juniors roster spot. The first two games will be held in Drummondville, and Shawinigan before heading to Ontario. In general, the QMJHL sends the least amount of players (out of the OHL, and WHL), but there are a few that could have a large impact if selected.

F Patrice Cormier – Cormier played a very important checking role on last year’s gold medal winning squad. Named Captain for the QMJHL all-star team, I expect Cormier to be back with Canada come December and should compete for a larger role in the offense. The 6′2″ 208lb power forward will cause other teams fits.

F Luke Adam – Not many people are talking about Adam, but I am a huge fan of his two way game. He is off to his best start in his QMJHL career, and I can see him sneaking in and grabbing a roster spot for Team Canada.

F Jordan Caron – The talented spark plug plays a tough game and has a great shot. Caron may be on the outside looking in for Team Canada, but I think he should get a camp invite.

D Simon Depres – The first member of the Saint John Sea Dogs on the QMJHL all-star team, Depres posses great size and plays a great two – way game. Depres has represented Canada at the U18 tournament and I epxect him to crack Team Canada’s line-up in Regina this season.

D Yann Sauve – The second Sea Dog on the QMJHL all-star team, Sauve also posses great size and is a heavy hitter. I’m not sure if Sauve has enough to make Team Canada, but should get an invite.

D Charles-Olivier Roussel – Roussel will play any type of game he’s asked. Offense, Defensive, or Toughness, this guys can do it all.

G Jake Allen – I really believe that Allen will be Team Canada’s starting goaltender come the World Junior tournament. Allen posses great positioning skills and has very good lateral movement. He also has experience backstopping the Canadian U18 squad a couple of years ago.

The Team Canada Development Camp was held in August and included 44 of the best Canadian born Junior Hockey players. The entire roster can be seen at Hockey Canada.

With the NHL becoming a younger and younger league each season, Team Canada is left with some difficult roster decisions with many talented players remaining with their respective NHL clubs. Of the 44 players invited to the Team Canada Development Camp, the following may be unavailable to participate for Canada at this years tournament.

Forget About It

John Tavares – This should come as no surprise. Tavares is playing on the top lines and will not be let go for Team Canada.
Tyler Myers – Myers is logging big time productive minutes in Buffalo and barring a miracle will not play for Team Canada. Missing a 6-8 defensemen is quite a big blow!
Matt Duchene – Duchene is currently playing for the biggest surprise team in the NHL – the Colorado Avalanche. Don’t expect the two-way forward to be available for Team Canada.
Ryan O’Reilly – Another surprising Colorado Avalanche player. Most didn’t expect O’Reilly to make the NHL club this year, but he has been a pleasant surprise.
Evander Kane – Another young player logging major minutes is Evander Kane. With the lack of forward depth in Atlanta, Kane should not be expected to wear the Team Canada jersey.
Michael Del Zotto – Another defensman having a great year in the NHL. Named Rookie of the Month for October…Canada won’t be able to use him.
James Wright – Wright isn’t talked about very much with Stamkos doing so well, but he is also providing the Lightning with some valuable minutes and will not be available for Canada.

Possible

Alex Pietrangelo – Pietrangelo has only played 7 games so far this season for the Blues, but has played pretty solid logging 18 minutes some nights. Expect a decision on his future shortly.
Cody Hodgsen – I expected Hodgsen to have been playing for Vancouver out of training camp. With a slow start to the pre-season and a nagging back injury, I beleive he will be wearing a Team Canada sweater come December. That would be a big relief!
Ryan Ellis – I thought when he signed an entry level contract with Nashville that he may be unavailable. But it looks like he is still playing in the OHL and should be ready for Team Canada.
